Not only was it 5 and 11, but a good chunk of the time the 5th defenseman
wound up as a "DNP" (did not play) because coaches generally only used 4,
rotating the pairs back and forth throughout the game.
It was somewhat the same for the 10th and 11th forwards, although not
quite as common for them to get "DNP" because they were often the
dedicated penalty killers. However, I see dozens of examples from that
season alone where in a low specialty teams game, the coach only used 13 skaters.
And the cheap/budget teams (Oakland and Chicago) often only dressed 15
to begin with to save a few bucks on salaries.
