I thought that was potential in the Arizona/Kuemper trade negotiations and work in a 8 year sign and trade for Hall that would lower the cap hit by $1M per to get the extra year.
If the Flames can move Gaudreau, Ryan, Rittich, Hanifin without taking much more than ELC salary back (and obviously picks/prospects) they could theoretically sign all 3 of Hall, Pietrangelo, and Markstrom while keeping Mangipane and still have 7-8M to fill out their roster.

But how is the back diving year not circumvention? I was under the impression that they had banned a certain decline in the back half of the contract years unless it was graduated. And if that's the case then what motivation would pietro have to play in yesrs 6-8 if he made 90% of the cash in years 1-5?
The idea makes sense i suppose for cap purposes, but i thought they explicitly changed the rules to prevent this.
