This depends on lifestyle expectations. A small Canadian city does have its draws. Fairly bland politics for the foreseeable future. Good healthcare system regardless of where you go. Really good education system. Good environment and great setting. If you're into the outdoors and the mountain lifestyle, it is hard to beat Calgary.
Where Calgary fails is you are living in a fishbowl. It is cold for much of the year. You have to like winter sports. You're landlocked. Canada is setup for the collective good, not the individual good, so that can have its drawbacks.

The notion that Calgary is a great‘family’ city is totally bunk. And besides someone making millions can create a perfect family scenario for themselves just about anywhere. Why settle where the streets are icy and there are no leaves on trees for 8 months per year??

This is bang on, but a caveat. These players are paid enough where they can live in the best communities, afford the best schools, afford the best doctors, and not have to deal with the riff-raff of the common folk. This is where these players get to pick and choose their lifestyle away from the game. If you're looking for arts and cultural things to do away from the rink, Calgary is low on the list. Same can be said for entertainment, although no one is doing well in that regard during a pandemic. I think that Calgary struggles with a lot of the American cities because of the environment advantage, but with the crazy crap going on the US politically, I can see why players would cast a wanting eye to Calgary or Vancouver at the moment.
