He wasn't unknown at the time in the least. On most lists he was the #2 goalie, and on some the #1.
Doesn't mean it was the right pick. But calling it a nonsense pick is also hyperbole.

Absolutely this. Another thing is if teams have 2 guys ranked closely, it seems common for them to pick the player who is showing the greatest improvement recently. For goaltenders that year is was definitely McDonald, as that piece points out Mason was only ranked #7 at the mid-term rankings for CSS and sky rocketed up to #2.
