I’d only be unhappy because “Deep South” is the wrong comparison. We’re the Texas of Canada.
I defend our urban population (Calgary and Edmonton) but having spent a lot of time in rural communities, I think it’s true. I’ve even commented numerous times about how Calgary earned its moniker as Texas North based on my experiences since I came to Alberta 20 years ago.
It sucks for the people who are lumped in with the rest but that’s life.
The only part that’s hypocritical is that rural Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Sask and BC have the same problems.
If you’re from red deer, it sucks that your city has a bad rep but then again maybe it’s earned.
