But outside Canada, especially in less traditional hockey markets, the argument seems to be that it is probably less likely that a hockey player can capitalize on their local celebrity-status when they aren't really celebrities.

My wife's cousin played professional in Germany and Italy and he told me stories about the perks he would get even there. For example, he was also given a car to use the whole time he was in Germany. He also lived in an apartment and never had to pay rent. I am not sure what the deal was there. His restaurant tabs would often be taken care of as well.
