Gives them the ability to compete in the "exclusives" market. I put that in quotes because we know those games will be made available to PC as well.

Yeah Sony has been more aggressive in paying for exclusives than Microsoft has been for some time now. Whether they're 1-year timed exclusives, full-on exclusives, DLC exclusives etc etc., Sony has been going crazy on this front.
I love this move from Microsoft's perspective. More competition between Sony and Microsoft = better for gamers in the end.
IF Microsoft goes exclusive with the big hitters, it only means Sony will have to respond with their own big hitters. Plus, if Microsoft does go exclusive they have a great way of selling it to Playstation owners anyways - "Hey, subscribe to GamePass and stream it on XCloud"
