There are a few big differences.
Firstly, the Flames signed the Gio contract in a very difference cap context, The Flames still had some flexibility in that manner, which is no longer the case.
Secondly, $6,750,000 for a point in time was a steal of a deal ( this season onward it is an overpay). Pietrangelo is 100% going to make more than 8 mill next year no matter what team it is on
Thirdly, Gio was an exception to the rule being able to play elite hockey after the age of 32. Just because a player can still do it at 29 means nothing moving forward. Pietrangelo could easily #### the bed, the Flames were lucky Gio never blew up.
