I truly think that the Flames were and are waiting to move into their new building to evolve out of the Reebok edge design, and obviously the plan was not have it take as long. I have some really old first hand knowledge of this and the reasons for the Edge design etc.
Offtopic, but if you could've asked owners and executives privately, their biggest regret over the past 15 years would've been not getting the arena deal done in 2006 or 2007 when plans were almost set and fairy far along the process. They delayed at then time due to many smaller factors; however, if they knew the upcoming massive change and role social media would play in shifting public and local government sentiment away from these projects, they would've quickly gotten past the barriers at the time and they would've been playing in a new building in 2012 or 2013.
Back to jerseys, in the meantime instead of revamping, they keep the design and they release the 3rd jersey in 2013 and retros to hold the club over.
Whatever is released in early October is another jersey part of the NHL 4th jersey program, with, as mentioned, some hybrid take on some old designs. So may well be the Snotnhorse. Or black jerseys. Regardless, likely the Flames probably don't get a newly designed primary set until the new arena. Sure, they may use the red and white retros in the meantime as a change to tide them over.
