I’ve never seen Gio slump offensively like he did this year but he still took a ton of shots—he just converted at less than half his usual rate, just over 3% shooting this year compared to over 7% on a regular basis. I seem to remember he also got hit hard by the secondary assists bug this year, not getting very many of those at all.
Defensively he was superb as usual. The Flames don't really have a replacement just yet for what he does in his own zone. I think his gap control was still spot-on and he still made good breakout passes. He was elite at controlling the play in the regular season.
The playoffs were a totally different story though and I shudder to think of the state of the Flames' back-end if that's the Gio that comes back next year. That has to be under consideration.
