Move one of Giordano/Hanifin and there is now a need to acquire OEL.
Your top 4 in the future should either have the LD side as OEL/Valimaki or Hanifin/Valimaki. Doesn't make sense to acquire another D when offense has always been Calgary's main issue.

I don't disagree from a positional need but I also look at it like the move would basically rewind the clock on the Flames top defensman for years to come. I would be assuming Gio is as good as gone of course. But think of it like they just took Gio and made him 29. But he'd be swedish.
I'm not as sour on the Flames investigating this. I've always wanted them to be more ruthless with how they deal with declining players and if they are essentially putting Gio out to pasture in favour of a younger replacement, its actually not a bad idea.
