Yeah I really can't agree with that.

Literally any two not-crazy adults should and would have handled that better.

If the mother had called her neighbor for help and that neighbor shot the kid, no one would defend that neighbor for one second. It wasn't even that these cops didn't know what they were getting into, so that's not even an excuse.

Yeah there should be trained mental health professionals on call for situations like this, but unfortunately almost no country has that. Cops have to deal with this stuff in a lot of places. Elsewhere it's just a given that you never shoot the children you're supposed to be helping.
