I like to make my rigs last so that's why I'm leaning towards the 2080 variety because eventually I'll move into 4k as that becomes the new normal. I'm eyeballing the "glorious" intel build on pc part picker, but with 2080 super instead of ti to save a few bucks.

I think that unless you're getting the latest top end card, you'll always be having to make concessions to run a game at max settings in 4K. Unfortunately, I don't see 4K being the standard for the foreseeable future. Right now, I can run almost all games at 1440p at max settings on a 1080. With a 2080 super or similar card I think you'd be set for quite a while even if you decided to pick up a 1440p monitor down the road.
