lets compare the MLB luxury tax to the supposed NHLPA version......

MLB has a 20% tax on any dollar spent over $100M, meaning the Yankees payroll of $182M cost them a whopping tax of $16.4M

If the rumours are true, the RedWings $82M payroll would cost them an additional $59M, under the NHLPA proposal.

The MLB styled tax is a joke, that the Yankees can make up in 3 home playoff games. The NHLPA version actually has enough bite to bring about some cost certainty.


The Jays priced themselves out of the market with Carlos' original deal. No arbitrator is going to award the top ranked positional player a decrease in pay, so he would have probably got $20M+.
