For the player they are today, Mang is better than Kap. Kap returned the 15th overall - so if you want to argue that Mang should be worth the 17th, or 18th? Sure, but Mang is worth a 1st.

Not convinced. It’s certainly no slam dunk the Flames can get a first for Mangiapane.
Mangiapane certainly has value, but I think Kapenen is the more ‘known’ asset. What kind of first would you expect for Mangiapane? Mid round? Late round?
I also think you won’t see first round picks being moved as much as we are accustomed to seeing. With Pandemic economics taking hold, cost controlled cheap players are at a premium more than ever, I think. The pens are bit of an outlier because their window is directly tied to Sid and Malkin. And for what it’s worth, I’ve yet to read an analysis of that trade that says the Pens came out on top.
Lastly, if Mangiapane is hands down the better player, why didn’t the Pens offer 15 for Mangiapane?
