If you look at the history of the Flames under Treliving's tenure, you can point at the '2nd best regular season team in the NHL' - but it looks more and more like that was an outlier.
I have never once even questioned replacing Treliving, but I think the time has come to really consider it.
Has he hired a coach that has given this organization stability and confidence? Absolutely not.
Has he turned this rebuilding squad into anything more than a bubble team? Absolutely not.
Has he used valuable assets in a rebuilding phase to accelerate the rebuild, perhaps misjudging where the team was? I think he has, though hindsight is 20/20 there.
Has he managed to plug the hole in goaltending? He hasn't.
He didn't build a team that is capable of going past the 1st round. The team he has built has some good pieces, but is otherwise an under-performing team. He doesn't seem to have his finger on the pulse of this team, so to speak.
He hasn't really inspired a lot of confidence. I also think the Tkachuk contract is going to haunt this team.
I am not screaming for him to be let go, but in a way, I would feel sort of relieved now if was let go. Once again, this is the very first post that I think I have ever made even questioning Treliving.
This team simply is not even close to contending, for whatever reason. At the end of the day, he is the guy in charge of making all the moves - player roster and coaching staff - not to mention professional scouting which has been an enormous disappointment. I think it is time to relieve him. For me anyway, it isn't about wanting to see blood - I just think he has simply not done a good enough job, and I won't be sad to see him go. I am not at the point where I really want to give him the boot - if he returns, that's fine with me. I just don't have the confidence in him any longer, and I would rather see a change, a fresh pair of eyes going over the roster and making the required decisions - especially where coaching is concerned.
