Time to experiment and put Monahan on wing and see what you get. He can't be #1C next season so who cares about another 10 minutes of it.
The Lightning realized having a one-dimensional (but incredible at that dimension) shoot-first #1C is not a recipe for success with Stamkos and made the change.
A shoot-first #1C is tough to begin with, but if you role one, they have to be good through all 200 feet - think Eric Staal as an example. Sure Monahan could pass as #2 but that's not gonna happen.
Love Monahan's finishing ability but he can't play #1C.
