I know, but I really think it's time to re-examine this because it intuitively does not make any sense given the way the game is played nowadays. Having a guy without a stick is almost as bad as not being there at all, and you have to be in that position for longer. The time it takes to get a new stick, or change, is enough time for the other team to maybe get a shot off. If you're stuck in no man's land without one for the entire time that they're in your zone, that seems like a much better chance to score.

If someone in the analytics community looks into it and comes to the conclusion, "actually being shorthanded for that few second is worse", fine, but it doesn't seem like anyone is even questioning this potentially obsolete piece of hockey wisdom.
