He took the safe choice leaving money on the table for security. When you consider how salaries for top players have been escalating you can make a case that he and most top young players are best off signing the minimum deal extension that takes them to free agency as there's little doubt to me as a UFA he would not only be able to choose a better destination but would be likely eclipsing $15 million/season. Really the biggest issue for McDavid at the end of the day is that he hitched himself to one of the worst run organizations in professional sports so when I see him hold his head down like at the end of the Hawks series I don't feel sorry for him at all as he's getting exactly what he signed on for. He and his agent really should have known better.
