He could have signed a 4 or 5 year contract at the exact same $12.5M and the Oilers probably don’t even bat an eye at that request. Instead of having 6 years left in that organization he’d only have 2-3 until UFA and would hold a lot more leverage if he wanted out.
Every offseason his body language screams somebody that isn’t happy there and I feel like there may even be some resentment between McDavid and Draisaitl that’s growing in terms of who gets the better line mates to play with.
I still think it’s a bit weird that for the playoffs they broke up the RNH - Draisaitl - Yamamoto line and stapled RNH next to McDavid.

And I think Matthews signed his contract with Toronto shortly after?
From a Player's perspective I love the structure of the Matthews contract, he going to hold Toronto hostage with that whereas McDavid's contract basically makes him their prisoner.
