Holland gives his end of the season presser
Fair analysis of his own team but "Haw Haw" at Smith's future with the Oilers
taken from a redditor's summary
Spoiler!
Quote:
Said he felt good before getting into play-ins.
Regular season - over the first 70 games - made progress in many areas. 25th -> 12th in points, PP 9th ->1st, PK 30->12th, GA 25th->15th, GF - 20th->14th.-Lots of impact from young players: Bear, Yams, Jones(in 2nd half)
Massively disappointed they didn't beat Chicago. Work to be done over the summer to get to the next step.
Wants to build on to the success of what they had this year.
At GMs meeting was told cap would be between 84-88M, pandemic will affect what this looks like and this will certainly impact Oilers moves.
Relationship with Athanisiou - impact wasn't as good as KH hoped. Will assess over the next 6-7 weeks.
Game 1 - weren't ready to play. Felt like we were chasing during the series. Game 2 - played well. Game 3 - Breakdowns turned into losses. Game 4 - Fine lines. Disagrees with assessment that Oilers looked different during playoffs than regular season. Chicago was ready to go, rest of the series the Oilers played fine, but fine isn't good enough. Must be more prepared for next year. Hoping for this to be a learning moment.
Thought the goal-tending didn't play as well in the playoffs as in the regular season, however its a small window of 4 games. Smith is a UFA, Kosk 2 years left. Evaluating what direction they are going. Wants Skinner to establish himself this year in the AHL. Deciding whether to re-sign MS in the next few weeks.
Middle of the pack in Defense through regular season. (25th-15th GA) wants to be a top 10 team in terms of goals against. The reality of trying to upgrade defenseman - is not easy. Lots of young D in the pool. Scouts are doing video scouting over the playoffs.
Lots of offense (Nuge, McD, Drai), need to get more offense from deeper in the roster. 4 goals/game against, hard to win with 5+ goals every night. Defend better, and more offense from the bottom part is the goals to improve next year.
They want to continue to make steps and it takes small steps. . They wanted to be in a position by March 1st to be control their own fate. Thought they made progress in 19-20 and need to make more in the off-season. Made a lot of progress compared to the 18-19.
comparing to the detroit dynasty, there are way more disappointments than successes. the disappointments fueled the success in detroits. despite four cups, lost 2 finals, took a long road to get here, development of team. The good teams find a way to find a way into the playoffs every year, not making playoffs year after year is a huge step back. Needs to make the team better, deeper.
They (connor, drai) do need to be better defensively but they are learning it. Especially for longer playoff runs. They did recognize drais bad defensive play in Nov, talked to him about it during the end of season meetings. They are learning and getting better, Tip told them to play harder away from the puck and KH believes they have.
KH has determined what he would like to do this offseason. Can he do it? That is the task at hand. They are cap challenged but there are 20 teams like that with the flat cap. Trades will be similar money for similar money, if there is a trade.
Hoping Haas/Nygaard will contribute from being in the lineup from the get go next year. Some improvement has to come from within.
Feels good about the player chemistry (off the ice/on the ice), adding Mike Smith, James Neal adding the vet presence helped positivity in the locker room. Vets are important in the lineup.
Exit interview was only a few hours after the game with Connor. Unique exit interview in that they are typically done a few days after the season is done. In this case it was within hours of the game finishing and the next morning because of people needing to leave the bubble etc. Mood of the meetings: The feeling was of massive disappointment, massively down. Ken intends on reconnecting with the teams leadership group (connor, leon, nurse, nuge) over the next month after everyone has had a change to digest, emotions down, and have time to re-assess and talk about progress, team chemistry. Gathering info for off season to see what moves need to be made.
Believes he has a way better understanding of what the team has in terms of defenseman and what he would like to and decisions moving forward.
He thought Dave Tipp was a big piece of the progress of the team. Says he made all players feel like they have a piece of the pie, stock in the company. When you lose, its easy to second guess decisions and that they're open for criticism. Part of the game and means that fan base cares, fuel for them to do better next ear.
Ennis - fractured leg 2-3 months. Ready for 2020-21 season , UFA but played well. Will talk to the agent as the offseason progresses Larrson - On the ice for monring of game 3, early in the warmup, back spasm. were hoping they would win game 4 to have him in game 5.
