I dont know about that, its sounds a little 'Lizard-man-y' to me, especially considering that usually Bettman doesnt interfere that much with club-level affairs beyond press sound-bites, but either way McDavid's motivation for the contract is easily understandable.
He gets paid. Regardless of performance or injury or success, he gets paid. He is set for life.
What he does after that is up to him. Whether he plays it out or demands a trade or whatever, hes got his money.
