You can get a discreet marker installed on a streetlight location near the site of the incident or have a permanent marker placed on a bench or something nearby.

Tell that to the memorial on southbound Deerfoot at the Southland overpass. That memorial has been up for 25 years. It's totally obnoxious and selfish.
