This isn't a commentary on the above proposals, but the Leafs will likely have to do something. They have over $33 million of cap allotted to their top 3 forwards and $40+ million to their top 4 forwards.....and now there is a flat cap and they have only $4 million cap space left with only 16 players signed.
They might find other ways to shed cap, but downgrading one of the big 3 or 4 to lesser players and saving cap while at the same time gaining futures might be one way they choose to go about it.
Also, trading Marner for Gaudreau is not a downgrade for them. They save over $3 million in cap, switch one of their RH forwards to a LH forward, and don't really lose F all on the ice because Gaudreau is every bit as good as Marner IMO. They only lose the age battle and 3 years of control.
