If he's quite willing to work anywhere, he can just get a job posting on websites. Starting at a large company is a good way to learn the industry, any kind of specific training will be better, pay will be ok, benefits will be good.
Last thought is it would be good to work in marketable areas like Peace River / Ft Mac / Ft Sask where many companies are working, that way you can build contacts quicker. I'm not in trades but the industry as a whole is very relationship and reputation based.
