The border between Armenia and Azerbaijan has been tense for some time, but the heat ratcheted up several days ago when Armenia attacked an Azeri position because, allegedly, the Azeris flew a drone across the border into Armenia. Both sides have been trading shots the past few days.
The primary root of hostility between the two countries is the disputed territory of Karabakh, internationally recognized as belonging to Azerbaijan but the majority population is Armenian. It is currently governed by the Republic of Artsakh operating as a
de facto independent state.
Last night, protestors in Baku called for the government to end the quarantine and go to war.
Ironic note: both are members of NATO’s “Partnership for Peace” programme.
