One of media's jobs is to shine a light on the state so it can't become malignant in the dark. That's why the US First Amendment protects the free press, and why there is very little protected privacy in public spaces in Canada. In the era of cellphone cameras, we can all fill that role. The right to document in public exists precisely to deter this sort of abuse, which makes it particularly egregious when police attempt to nullify that right. Preventing the collection of evidence is the true 'obstruction of justice'.
