What I don't understand, and I'd really like someone to explain this to me, is how are the police so effing stupid? They know there's an intense amount of international attention currently being given to excessive use of force by American police departments, so what would possibly make them think it's a good idea to equip their riot gear and act like a bunch of fascist goons by breaking up a peaceful concert? Were they planning to lie about it and say that it was an unlawful violent riot? Did they fail to consider that literally everyone in attendance has a video camera in their pockets and would record their actions? Can they really be that dumb? What positive outcome were they possibly thinking would result from this? Who does this serve? Who does this protect?

The news cycle is short. The sooner there aren’t protests the sooner the public moves on. So just enough violence is required to surpress protests to make it feel unsafe to attend but not enough to make people want to protest more.
This strategy has worked since Reagan dealt with unions.
