But what SE Asia has gone through during the 19th and 20th centuries was almost constant war and oppression, and it didn't stop after the brutality of Japanese invasion and occupation either. The Korean war of the 50s and the Vietnam war prolonged the suffering of those long suffering peoples. The violence unimaginable.
There's a great 2019 Korean war movie called Roar to Victory that shows the unbreakable spirit of the Koreans before WWII. Very cool film.

Yeah, I think Thailand is the only country in Asia that's never been invaded and occupied by the West. Plenty of horrible stories and history all over Asia that's revealed if you visit those countries.
