This is all that matters.
It appears that Hamilton wanted off the team, doesn't really matter what the Flames felt at that point but for some reason it seems like the tensions got to the point where he wanted off the team.
At that point they went and got what at the time was a pretty decent return for him.
Could the Flames still use a guy like Dougie on the blueline? Sure they could. But if he's going to act like what AC describes above you have to trade him. And still to this day I think a trade involving Lindholm and Hamilton straight up would be pretty fair, IMO Lindholm is our most well rounded player and he's on a great contract now.
I also don't think it's a coincidence that Gio went crazy the following year and won the Norris, there were lots of rumours that he had something to prove and didn't love playing with Dougie.
