Weren't there rumours of him blowing off the team when they were doing team building things to grow the bond? Even in my work place, I am expected to go to work outings. It might not be what I want to do, but it is a good way to build relationships which all winning teams need.

To some degree this is true, but it is also true that organizations are moving towards more inclusive culture creation. Why should people have to bend to the company? If someone doesn't want to go out for a drink-fest, for whatever reason, that should be valid and it shouldn't mean they aren't as big a part of the culture or team as those that do.
It's an example of historic and narrow thinking that sits in sports and business.
