I disagree with the premise, but even if it was noticeable at the age of 23, there's very little chance that he'd still be "pouty" as a 30+ year old veteran.

People don’t generally change their mental makeup as they age; if anything, it becomes more pronounced.
The Flames didn’t believe that Hamilton had the “Toews” like attitude of winning at all costs. They moved him before that became well known in a trade that was criticized by many here at the time but has proven to be quite successful.
Treliving had facts not generally known at the time of the trade, which is often the case.
