I don't think it is all about money. Depending on how many players are involved in the class action, and after the lawyers get their cut, there probably won't be a big payout.

For years, hazing has existed and there haven't been any indications that there are serious efforts to fix it, so a lawsuit is the next step. Let's face it, the threat of being sued is probably a better tool than trying to appeal to the morals of people who allowed this stuff to happen to begin with.

I have no doubt that this is a case where the abused have become abusers for a long time and that people who live in that world became desensitized to what was going on.
