I don’t know if I posted about this case in the past. Really, really tragic and horrifying.
Corey did have a gun, but was running away from the plainclothes officer (Raja) and it was later proven Raja never identified himself as a cop. Forensics showed that the location of Corey’s gun when found showed he was not a threat to Raja.

I agree with you, afc. Of course the cop is going to claim self-defense. I think people should actually start doing practice drills for possible cop encounters. Hands up should become second nature.
About 10 years ago I stopped at a gas station for drinks and snacks on my way to a Panthers game. As I turned to approach the register there was a deputy pointing a gun at me. I often wonder what might have happened if my hands weren’t full and I reached to scratch my butt or something due to nerves.
The attendant screamed “That’s not her”. In the corner crouching behind the coffee machine was my virtual twin, right down to the blue hoodie and jeans. Thing is she had a whopping large knife.
I do wonder what would have happened if I were black. I probably would have assumed the worst, and perhaps acted accordingly. I was thinking, oh, they must know I’m the wrong person. And honestly a bit of privilege came out.
I had already had some horrible experiences with cops. A rape case, and a couple of other situations. They don’t seem to take women very seriously.
But if you’re rich or can throw names around- you’re in. I was falsely accused of something by a female neighbor. Even though I could prove my innocence at the time the cops were not interested. Why? She was Miss Polo Queen, with all the name-dropping and connections. They did not listen to my side of the story at all, and the consequences were pretty devastating. Am in the process of a name change as it just never ends.
So I can only have imagine how it is for a black person. There are people who know my side of the story, but what if you’re Black and the “right” people don’t care? That’s ultimately what it amounts to.
