The stink from the pulp mill was mostly rectified by raising the stack up the hillside. Now the smell is only noticable a handful of days a year. Air quality is poor though, due to it being so dry and dusty here. Particulate levels are above the recommended range a lot of the time.
On the positive side the weather is great, the fishing, golfing and mountain biking are literally world class. There is a large, family friendly ski resort 45 minutes from downtown. The economy is more and more knowledge-based and diverse every year. You can drive an hour any direction except south and get lost and die in the bush. If that isn't your scene it's 3.5 hours to Vancouver, 2.5 to Roger's pass, 6 hours to Calgary and the shuswap is in our backyard.
Not sure what more you could ask for.
