The win moved the Flames into the 5th spot in the lottery ahead of Columbus, who went on to win the 3rd overall pick.

Depending on whether you believe that the Flames would have chosen Thachuk with the 3rd overall pick (which Treliving has implied) or taken Puljujarvi (as Burke has stated they would have), Elson may have inadvertently helped save the franchise from making a huge mistake.
On the other hand in a different scenario with random number generators and a lottery ball machine in place, there's no assurances that the Flames would have had the same randomly assigned numbers as Columbus did nor that the same lottery balls would be chosen.
