It's a lot of work but looks 100% better than the carpet. We covered about 300 sq feet @ 2.97/sq foot. We went with birch gunstock hardwood from Home Improvement Warehouse. I believe it's 2-3/4 or 3" planks. It took 3 solid days to do get this done. You can see a bit of it in the pic below.
