There is reasonable evidence that Legally purchased Canadian guns are used in Crime and Hand guns are used for suicides. The question that needs more research how would substitution effect the effectiveness of such a ban.
I really hate how gun control proponents always start off with No one Needs X gun. It’s a terrible argument, there are very few needs so it leaves one open to many counter arguments.
The argument for Gun Control should be this policy is predicted to save X lives. The loss of people’s ability to own guns is a reasonable trade to make. Then you need to show why other policies that aren’t a ban are not working.
