This is pretty conjectural. I mean, is there any doubt that the NBA would have continued operations had Rudy Gobert not tested positive for COVID 19 when he did? The reason they were first to suspend play was that their players were the first to test positive. This was part of the NHL decision to follow suit the very next day:

The NHL doesn't deserve criticism for being second-to-the-punch here anymore than the NBA deserves any added credit for suspending their League first, given the circumstances. Had a NHL player been the first athlete in the "Big Four" to test positive they would have been first to suspend their season, and the NBA would quickly have followed.
