Its funny, say a lot of bad things about George, but when it came to stuff like online content and fan made creations, he actually encouraged it as long as you weren't blatantly using stuff to make money.
Paramount and Star Trek were incredibly vindictive about it, killing any fan made project whether they were trying to make money or not.
Under Disney they are really clamping down on fan for fun projects and even fan made movies.
