Pure money. Contact obligations with broadcaster and sponsors for the season and playoffs. Those contracts aren't completed or fulfilled reasonably, then the league, teams and players don't get paid, certainly for the lucrative playoffs. Then the league, get a credit for next season, but that means then the league and teams and players are agian behind, revenue wise for next season.
And, there's a very good chance the league doesn't start up in October if they cancel this season or not, because of various cities worse then others, and the travel restrictions. Regardless, almost certainly there won't be full stands , so again negrrmind the gate revenue, the broadcast and sponsorship money won't be incoming either, and, as mentioned, will be working off the credit from this season, if it's cancelled.
League, teams and players will lose at least half a seasons worth of revenue if they cancel this year, as play next season I can see not starting until Christmas at least, if they want to have all cities involved and travel etc. So that then too could be a short season.
