This is a heinous crime, one which is unprecedented in Canada.
I don't know if understanding the motive helps people heal, but I think it's helpful from a "root cause analysis" perspective to see what can be done better in the future, either from a detection or prevention perspective, but at a minimum an incident response planning angle.
As an aside, the RCMP just confirmed that the assailant/mass murderer did NOT posses a Firearms PAL (Posession and Acquisition License), so he was not a legal gun owner that is monitored daily by the RCMP. He was also convicted of an assault back in 2002 (as best as I can recall), and was prohibited from owning any firearm or weapon.
