I think the underlying motive is getting off on the feeling of control, combined with a person that doesn't feel empathy for others. Taking another person's life is the ultimate control move.

I think its hard for reasonably well adjusted people such as you or I to ever totally understand it... we developed empathy at some point in our lives, and our desire for control is usually satisfied in much smaller segments such as taking ownership for a work project, lol.
