Reinhart was traded to the Canucks at the start of the 88-89 season, and, IIRC, the rationale was that although when healthy, he was still one of the Flames’ best defensemen, it was likely he would not be able to play a full season. Because of his uncertain health, keeping him would mean he would have to be a spare part on the roster, even if he was a better player than the bottom tier of defense or the 4th line centre. But trading him (and Steve Bozek) to a divisional rival for a wasted 1989 3rd round draft pick, has to rate as one of Fletcher’s worse trades.
