I've got some growing now so I should be fine, just thought it was weird.

Only went to 1 island tonight, normal island, regular fruit regular trees regular flowers.

So I tried the fence on the rock thing, crafted fence with just the materials I harvested while stripping the island and it totally works, blocks the roach spawn. I stripped it down to one tree so the only thing that could spawn were Atlas moths, water bugs, tiger beetles, and tarantulas, and I filled up my inventory with moths and tarantulas pretty fast after that.

I'm sure they'll patch that out though.
