He wanted to find out what really happened to Jimmy in the desert. Nacho had dropped him off at the same location where Jimmy had picked up the money. The reason that location was chosen was because it had a single way in and out.
While he was waiting, he realized that if Jimmy's story was true, they would have passed his broken-down car on the way to the drop-off. Since they hadn't, he had Nacho drive back along the road until he saw the tire tracks where the car had been pushed off the road. Upon finding the car, he saw the bullet hole and realized that the car had been involved in a shootout. If the car had been shot with a high-powered round, it likely meant that something happened other than simply Jimmy's piece of crap car breaking down forcing him to walk to the truck stop.
If someone had rescued Jimmy from an ambush or something like that, Lalo wanted to know who it was and why because he knew it wasn't one of his men. Also, if Jimmy had been ambushed, he likely wanted to know who was behind that as well.
