To me, Toews and Kopitar are very similar players. If you look at their accomplishments, points, etc., there isnt much separating them. However, Kopitar is never held in the same esteem. Toews was elevated to legend status after that WJHC tournament and he has stayed there ever since.
Maybe I'm cynical, but I sincerely feel that if you switched Toews and Kopitar's last names, nationalities, etc., the prevailing view of both players would be very different.
Toews is a great player, but he wins this "award" for me every time, at least in the modern era. Not a criticism of him as a player per se, but there were years where he was deified by Canadian hockey media. And yes, him holding a spot in the top 100 while Malkin is not is silly.
