I'll actually throw this one in as a departure from the norm.
The first time that I watched this movie, it wasn't my favorite. I had to grow into my appreciation, by the second time I watched it, and understood that it really wasn't a war movie. With my expectations altered, I could really sit back and enjoy the way that it was put together.
Here, the speech is drawn out. It's not lengthy. But the overall impression is due to the silences that are allowed between the words, and a perfect delivery and acceptance by the listening actor.
Terrance Malick lost his mind soon after this, which is the only explanation I can come up with for Tree of Life, but this is so finely crafted, from the Hans Zimmer score to the John Toll cinematography.
