They did have Dan Quinn who was a good offensive player.

I looked at that 88/89 team and looked at the careers of some guys in that team. Almost all of them had their best offensive production playing on Lemieux's team. For some of them it was night and day difference.

Mario put up 199 points that year. The only other superstar he had was Coffey.

Gretzky did numbers like that with the likes of Messier, Coffey, Kurri, Anderson, etc. Not trying to diminish Gretzky's achievements, but I truly wonder how much Lemieux could have done with better teammates in that same era, without injuries.
Rob Brown was good until his face was destroyed in a bad play - his play never recovered.

Mario’s career without illness and injury - he would have been close to Gretzky’s career numbers IMO.
