What would be the easiest method to get him to be able to play Sonic? Just emulate it on PC? Would be better if we could do it on the couch. Is that someone available through a Wii?

The new Sonic Mania that came out in 2017 looks and plays exactly like the classic games, available on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. If you want to play the classics and don't know much about emulation the easist way would be to buy a Genesis Mini

As far as emulation goes you could read into hacking the Wii and it could play all of the classic consoles up to the 16-bit era. Another cheap option would be a Raspberri Pi running RetroPie, but that does still require quite a bit of setup. If you want to emulate from a PC, the fastest way to get playing would be to install RetroArch, install the Genesis Plus GX core and be playing in a few minutes
